Hurston returned south to, as she herself put it, collect negro folklore. Her first trip in 19 27, was a failure. When she interviewed an old man and got nothing useful out of the encounter, she resorted to plagiarizing another ethnographer's report about him. This ethical lapse was not made known until robert heminay's biography of hurston which appeared in 19 77.
