In the 80s and 90s, university education in Britain was such an elite thing. Anyone who went to university had to be either some kind of prodigy or basically you were posh. The U.S. system for whatever its faults is just cast so wider net and more people wind up going to university overall. And I think this is a product of shrinking access to college by Gen Xers and most millennials.
