Makar's only light comes from his correspondence with this woman who lives down the street. He never actually goes to see her in person because he doesn't want to start rumours. The novel sort of proceeds in a way, through their letters, they become very close. But as it's ending, now, she's marrying this richguy and kind of like adjusting to that. She finally writ him back, just saying all is over.
