The Importance of Emojis
Until 2015 Ying had never given emojis much thought. But then came a day she was texting her friend the journalist Jennifer Ait Lee. They were meeting for a meal of Chinese dumplings but when she went to her emoji keyboard planning to show her excitement she realized there was no dumplings on the phone. So she designed a dumpling and they decided to submit a proposal to the Unicode Consortium. It was accepted and in 2017 the dumpling took up residence on the emoji keyboard along with some other images they'd been working on. The chopsticks, Chinese takeaway box and fortune cookie are also part of their collection.
