The End of the World
In the year 15 hundred, painter botticelli painted a grand art work showing the nativity scene being attended by angels. It included the following apocalyptic inscription in greek above it: "This is the gate of the lord through which the righteous may enter" Rumours spread that the half millennium would bring death and devastation - even the coming of the antichrist. But the beleaguered pope, alexander, was determined that the celebrations would mark the dawn of a new beginning for the christian world.
