The Purpose of Tears
Bosworth also touches on egyptian weeping gods. A isis weeps for her son horus and her husband osir. There is just a plethera of weeping deities in the region, predating the hebrew god. So it stands to reason that this god too would weep as part of its relationship with its people. Interestingly enough, an eugaritic text from eugarit, an ancient port city in northern syria, discusses the brain as the source of tears. Sondo cry, do not shed tears for me. Spend not the flow of your eyes, nor the brains of your head with your tears, the brains ofyour head. That's great.
