Germany was referred to as the Huns in World War I propaganda by the British and the Americans. General Alfred von Schlieffen developed an elaborate plan for how Germany could beat both Russia and France at the same time. The German army essentially turned on its own because Austria-Hungary was useless, turning their backs on them almost immediately.
