The Cost of Wildfire Fighting

Since 1910, the US has lost about 35,000 homes to wildfire. Since 1996, of all new homes built in those states have been built on fire-prone lands. In order to make a dent in American wildfires, we need to treat about half of the nation's forests. But with most agencies unable to afford it, how do we pay for more prescribed burning? And how much would it actually cost?
