The story is meant to give the reader a sense of the course of the battle, and why it was for what happened at each stage. It ran through about 3,000 words in the end, which is a huge amount of text for a newspaper,. For a nine and a half month battle, it barely scratches the surface. The soldiers who were fighting in the area were very wary when I spoke to them. One named Azar said there were no heroic actions or tales of glory anymore that often dominated a lot of news coverage in the beginning. And another soldier named Andre told me, the soldiers come to us with that experience of war, good fathers, good men who work in normal jobs
