Once upon a time in science, there wasn't really any point in advancing garbag idea. In academia, what we have is a system of incentives that has changed and caused the era of gentlemen science. Democratizing science is a great thing, right? But when you had people who were financially secure doing science because they loved it, there they were shooting for being right in the long term.
