Maimonides and Spinoza: A Comparison
I follow Strauss in my appreciation for Maimonides because he didn't necessarily think that the law was fundamentally rational, even though he sought to give reasons for why we do the laws. But yes, he had a rational project, a project of truth-seeking, but that wasn't his only goal. He also valued being a good community member, being a compassionate person. That makes him compelling to me.
