The battle of brandywine was a crucial defeat for the americans that led to the fall of philadelphia. The continental army inflicted real casualties on its opponent but absorbed as many losses as it inflicted, obably more. Lafayette objectively and incontrovertibly proved himself. He passed his test with flying colors. He ran toward battle, not away from it. His commander in chief found him wounded and bleeding, but still struggling to protect his comrades.
