The Treadmill
The first proper use for humans of the step treadmill was in jails. Oscar Wilde suffered so much from it that he died two years after leaving jail. The prison treadmills were massive and could fit 24 people on each side. It is quite amazing though, isn't it? It was basically the hardest kind of punishment you could get apart from being killed for about 100 years. And now people do it for fun.
