Solar Power in Space

Solar panels are just never going to take care some parts of earth, that's right? And a similar problem for windt wind also directly produces electricity. Is this the kind of thing where, if we improved our grid dramatically, things could improve a lot? Or are we limited by the physics of mission loss as you go?
