A Spectacular Burst in the Milky Way

If it was a lot closer to the neighboring galaxy and it was pointed at us, would it do more than rattle the ionosphere? If it was in our own galaxy, it might do some damage. Luckily, gamma ray bursts are incredibly rare. So we think that they have been once every few million years in galaxies or per galaxy. And we also think that galaxies like the Milky Way are actually less likely to produce gamma ray bursts than small galaxies like the Magellanic clouds which orbit the Milky Way.
