Children with more severely abnormal EKG background patterns after cardiac arrest tend to have a worse outcome than patients with only mild or moderate background abnormalities. The presence of sleep spindles on the initial EEG at 24 hours, whether normal or abnormal morphologically, were associated with favorable outcome at 6 months. MRI actually has superior accuracy to the CT scan in assessing regional injury severity resulting from hypoxic ischemic injury.
