Five years after the Essex sank, a British Navy captain named Frederick Beachy found a whale boat washed ashore at the real Ducey Island. Inside were four skeletons. The men dug wells that collected rainwater and just drank bird blood when it ran low. Owen Coffin's mother didn't particularly enjoy hearing that her son had been killed and eaten by her nephew.
