The Importance of Research in Latin America
We went to Iowa State University, which was convenient for us because we're from the Midwest. My major professor was botanist who spent his life working on the tropical grasses and used Costa Rica as his laboratory. So that was easy. And so we went there and immediately started thinking about how we could get ourselves financed to do research in Latin America. We got a fellowships from the organization of American States that funded a significant part of our research. Our field program was actually four years long rather than usually a people doing a PhD.
