The Importance of Value Shifting in a Scene

In order for a scene to work, in order for it to serve its purpose within your story, it must include a change. The way I think of this is as a value shift. Value is a little bit like a state of being. In every scene, at least one value must change. It doesn't have to be a value that I just listed out. It could be just about anything, but something must change. Usually, several things will change. Not all of them are equally relevant to the novel as a whole. Scenes earn their place in a book by including avalue shift.
