The Unworkable Rates of Interest in Australia
I've been talking about this for some considerable time and the numbers have been unworkable for a number of years now. But I think we are at the point where the rubber meets the road and these 800,000 mortgages that are resetting this year will incorporate some 10 rate hikes. So what does this look like? When this does start to fall over, because there's been a few kind of false alarms before and as you say, the government have always come up with something. There's a question of how much capacity the government will have this time round because the numbers are pretty astronomical. The Commonwealth bank has cut the interest rate stress test for borrowers from 3% higher to 1%.
