In the late 15 hundreds catholic missionaries dabbled in proselytizing at hi nan. Some of these figures actually thrive there, and we see that they have tombstones that respect their catholic burial practices. They did have some who converted, apparently, but it was a relatively small group in that in that period. And then something very different happens, with the arrival of protestants. That specially going to take off in the nineteenth century, and especially in the wake of the opium wars.
