The Importance of Self-Control

Rousseau says education requires the kind of instilling of self control. Locke sees that as kind of the correct education for freedom. As liberalism itself becomes more egalitarian and more democratic in the 19th and 20th centuries, we sort of lose that Lockean, Rousseauian dichotomy between family and state.
