The Anglo-Saxon Party and the Court Party
During Edward's reign, a kind of new factionalism emerges between what you might call a sort of court party and a country party. A court party that is largely norman dominated and centrs on edward,. And a country party of largely anglo saxon magnates, potentates, minor nobles, warlords who resent this norman court. In ten forty five, he makes a strategic political marriage. He marries edith, who is a daughter of godwin, and hence also a sister of these various godwin sons who are being given major earldoms in major territories around england.
