A third of the book is about what has happened to our politics since the 1960s. And one of the first things we notice is the rise of identity politics, she says. "If you transgress, you are kicked out. You're cast into the wilderness forever" The absolutist attachment to groups based on ethnicity, race and erotic feelings makes people feel like mafiosi who can't be trusted.
