The History of Hysteria

Johanna Brown is a researcher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Austria. She specialises in our cultural understanding of hysteria. And hysteria has gone from a medical term to entering everyday discourse. As a medical condition, hysteria dates all the way back to ancient Greece as a diagnosis for erratic behaviour in women. Our modern fascination with hysteria really took off in the mid-1800s with a neurologist called Jean Marta Chaco.
