The boat is meant to be a metaphor for all the things in our lives that hold us back when we're at the threshold of doing something great, something uncomfortable. In my case, it was shame. The metaphorical boat that I needed to burn first was the shame I carried around from the stigma of growing up in abject poverty and taking care of my mother who died when he was 26. There was all the shame that I carried that I didn't realize until life brought me to my knees.
