Is There a Need for Manipulatives?

Research shows that manipulatives are very useful early on. They help children make a bridge between concrete and abstract representations of congrent te abstract being symbols. You need what is called a process of concreteness fading, so that you gradually remove more an more of those manipulatives to allow children to build those abstract representations.
