Polynesian navigation techniques are different to how european sailors will navigate. Navigators can find bearing using a star compass at night and en the sun during the day. They can orient the canoe using swells, which ar patterns in the waves that are coming at the ship. And you can also take advantage of wind patterns that vary seasonably.
