Copernicus and the Enlightenment Philosophy

Enlightenment philosophy was reinforced on a popular level by a series of discoveries and breakthroughs that seemed to put reason in charge of public factual truth. In determining that we live in a heliocentric, you know, sun centered universe, as opposed to an earth centered one, Galileo brought into question the trustworthiness of faith itself. Once Copernicus's theory was proven correct, religious pronouncements on all matters of public discourse became suspect.
