Stress between liberal cities and their more conservative states is starting to hit a breaking point over mask mandates. Previous disagreements over commerce and regulation of companies like uber or plastic bagbands hadn't gottento this level because it wasn't about urgent public health matters in places like the sun belt. Recent research looking at 30 european countries found that rural and urban areas there were diverging politically as well. Urbanites vote less, but are more disenchanted rather than distrusting.
