Name Changes in the Past

There are plenty of instances of name changes in the past that are not mere populas gimmocks, right? So a classic case is when a bit of the map goes from belonging to one state to another. For example, westerners who were once accustomed to referring to cities called kiev, karkov and lavov are now calling those places kive, kharke and levive. But it's not just territory changing hands that the drives these kind of name changes. It's quite often the case that countries will change the name of cities or regions for reasons that sometimes hark back to colonialism.
