The Suicide Crisis and the Responsibility of the Community to Prevent Suicide
If we look at the primary groups of people who do actually commit suicide, it's not very elderly people. The largest group of middle aged men, particularly men whose partners have left them or who have lost their jobs. They are also very high rates of suicide tragically among students and young people. There is a severe lack of provision of support and help within the NHS and wider services. All of those really important issues tend to get neglected. I sometimes wish that the only intellectual efforts that have been put into the fascinating and complex debates around the right to die in cases of terminal illness had also been put into seeking to find ways of preventing suicide.
