In middle school, Barbara was not down. She wrote her mother a note that Ruth actually kept in and said, if you were a nice mommy, you would make up and tuck me into bed. At the factory, the workers at Mattel were still mostly women but they were racially integrated,. even the bathrooms. In elementary school, you can just let your freak flag fly. I'm wearing my Oscar the crowd's baseball hat. I don't care. But like in middle school, you look around and you side-eye everyone and you want to fit in, fit in,fit in.
