Statistical Lesson of the Week - Simpson's Paradox
In 19 73, the university of berkeley admitted a smaller percentage of female graduate school plicants than male applicants. Three professors bickll hamel and o'connell investigated to see if there was evidence of discrimination. They found only four departments that had evidence of bias against women, and six with biases in favour of women. This may seem odd to the uninitiated. How can this happen? The problem is that, looking at just the aggregate data, you take into account the relationship of the gender of the applicant and the department. It turns out that women were more likely to apply to competitive departments and less Likely to apply to departments that were easy to get into.
