There are several ways to tackle the problem of heating and containment. Livermore is using lasers, while others use magnetic fields for confinement. Several startup companies are looking at mixture of these approaches. The same reaction that we just saw happen in America would give us exhaust speeds a thousand times faster than conventional space thrusters. It's an incredible potential if it can be harnessed for propulsion.
