Artificial intelligence is a quest to build machines that behave in ways similar to the intelligence that we see in a human. Machine learning is a methodology for taking large amounts of data and learning from that how to achieve good performance in certain tasks. Most of artificial intelligence tasks today are solved better via machine learning than via other approaches, but that doesn't mean that's a universal fact.
