The Influence of Chaimon on Athens

Athens' friendship with Sparta was the cornerstone of Chaimon's foreign policy. His son was even named Lachidimonius, which literally means the Spartan. Because his campaigns against the Persians in the East were widely successful, he made a profit from booty and became a popular commander. It is hardly surprising that nearly a decade of continuous military glory for Chaimon gave themistocles in his anti-Spartan policies, little chance of success in the 470s BC.
