The Battle of Valmi
Piedmont was on the east side of the alps. France was on the west side. The only way to move troops across the alps was through narrow mountain passes. With these enclaves, there were a few places at which the coalition controlled both sides of a pass. Every few miles in the alps, there is a strategic point that makes an ideal stronghold. In turn, the terrain in this part of the world is ideal for military defense. Mountains, cliffs and foothills interlaced with rivers and streams - now down to the mediterranean.
