The American 18th century saw rock star preachers like George Whitefield and Gilbert Tenet gaining ground swells of followers through camp meetings. Jonathan Edwards in the 1750s might have grumbled that teenagers were going to camp meetings and getting a little too hot under the collar while listening to sermons. By 100, however, the later the general epistles suggest that new converts were doing things at loggerheads with early Christianity's tacit expectations they would basically follow Mosaic law.
