The Origins of Homer
The characters that appear in Homer either fighting each other or struggling against obstacles. They don't seem to have an inner life, they are just acting. That's what struck a lot of classicists and philosophers who thought the right thing to say about what kind of being we are is that we are beings who can take responsibility for our action. So people have often thought these characters are somehow primitive with respect to us.
