We Don't Know What to Pray For
Both right natural reason and divine revelation tell us that we don't know how to pray. The bible is full of accounts of people asking for specific things. Saint thomas's resolution of this problem is one of the key elements of his teaching on prayer. He says, although man of himself is not able to know what he ought to pray for, the spirit, however, helps our infirmity in this because by inspiring us with holy desires, he makes us ask rightly.
