The Death of the Moth by Virginia Woolf
The Death of the Moth is only around 1200 words, a little bit less. Most of the essay is about Virginia Woolf watching a moth fly back and forth across a window pane. At first it seems to be flying vigorously, then less so, and ultimately she watches it die. It was probably written during Woolf's last fall, which would have been the fall of 1940. She died in March 1941.
