After 18 hundred the federalists were having trouble winning elections outside of the northeast. They also made a disastrous decision by not supporting the war of 18 12, which was a post revolutionary war match between the united states and the united kingdom. The whigs favored congress having more authority in the federal government. By contrast, the democrats favored the president and his executive branch having more power.
