Korea at this point was technically an autonomous kingdom operating under the political hegemone of the ching dynasty. In 18 84, a clique of these reformers, fully backed by the japanese, attempted a coup and called in help from china. The korean royal family again appealed to the chinese, who despatched about three thousand troops to help quell the revolt. But this was all done without notifying japan, as per the convention everyone had just signed.
