John winthrop junior was more sympathetic to anti nomianism than the other puritan leaders of the colony. He became a very active alchemist in the 16 forties and undertook business developments that you could see as in line with his alchemical quest. And he tried to raise further funds and investment to explore and mine more mineral deposits around new england, especially in connecticut. So when this controversy broke out again, winthrop was conveniently out of town.
