The Budget Situation in Australia
All signs are pointing to there being no dramatic changes announced by the Treasurer, Jim Chalmers. It is clear though that structural repair is necessary. There will be some good news actually in the short term in this budget and that comes about because tax revenues are going to be higher than was forecast even in last October. The medium term challenge is really that spending is growing quickly in a range of areas. We've made policy decisions that bake in higher spending through programs like the NDIS. And we haven't yet really had a discussion about how we pay for that.
