The Jade Emperor's Trick Worked

The first year of the zodiac was named after a rat who jumped off an ox's back. The cat, being a poor swimmer, struggled in the water before clinging to a branch. A dragon then landed on the shores of the river and smiled at the Jade Emperor. He made the creature the fifth animal in the Chinese zodiac. Not long afterwards, a snake slithered out from one of the horse's hooves when he took sixth spot.
