How Does the Higgs Field Give Mass to Particles?
The higgs field gives mass to particles by interacting with them. It is not responsible for giving things gravity, exactly. You can have inertial mass of a particle if it's out there in the middle of space, not interacting with anything else, with no gravity at all. The reason that we think the Higs exists came out of the attempt to combine electromagnetism and weak nuclear force. And when people tried to do that they ran into a problem: They're like big differences between electromagnetismand electro-weak forces. For example, Electro-weak Force has some nice properties which hold a second longer than Weak Nuclear Force. But these two ideas are not totally separate
