The Dam and the Dambusters in Ukraine
In 1941, as Nazi German troops were sweeping through what was then Soviet era Ukraine, Stalin's secret police blew up a hydroelectric dam in Zaparizia. That explosion flooded villages along the banks of the Nipra River, and it killed, and this is staggering, 20,000 to 100,000 civilians. So I just want to emphasize for listeners, the devastation that the destruction of a dam can wrought. And so I think this explains why Zelensky is saying what he is saying about the significance of this.
