Sheitra Powell is the African American Collections and Outreach Archivist for an archive called the Southern Historical Collection. The unfortunate reality is that culture doesn't last forever. As radio stations began to beam across vast landscapes in the early 20th century, the unique sounds were being replaced by more popular, more homogenous culture. Alan Lomax made it his mission to capture all this stuff before it disappeared forever.
